STDs in CA

STD burden among women in California between 2001 and 2018

Chlamydia remains the most common reportable disease and highest in Fresno, Kern, and Sacramento counties.

Across California, the highest rates were among young women who are at risk for serious reproductive health outcomes such as pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. Disproportionally higher rates among Black/African American adolescents and young adult women persisted statewide, and were three to five times higher compared with white adolescents and young adult women, respectively (1).

Gonorrhea is highest in Fresno, Kern, and Del Norte Counties.

Rates were highest for those under 30 years of age. Racial disparities persisted with gonorrhea rates among Black/African Americans nearly five times higher than among whites (1).

Early syphilis is highest in San Joaquin, Fresno, and Kern Counties.

The number of cases among females of reproductive age (15-44 years of age) continued to rise, increasing by 36 percent compared with 2017. Racial disparities continued, with early syphilis rates among Black/African Americans nearly three times higher than among whites (1).

The data contain case counts and rates for sexually transmitted diseases (chlamydia, gonorrhea, and early syphilis which includes primary, secondary, and early latent syphilis) reported for California residents, by disease, county, year, and sex. STD variables with rate per 100,000 population data are selected for female between 2001 and 2018.
  3. Presentation. The female STD rates are compared by county and the range of median with quartiles are presented in line graphs. Tableau Public Edition (2020.4.1) - Story layout is used to present three graphs.
